清水酒造 (SHIMIZU SAKAGURA)
A digital presence for a 156-year-old Niigata sake brewery that balances historical reverence with modern e-commerce capabilities.
Founded in the first year of the Meiji era, Shimizu Sakagura is a traditional Japanese sake brewery in Nagaoka, Niigata. They needed a digital platform that respected their 156 years of history while offering a modern, frictionless way for customers to explore their products, book brewery tours, and understand their deep connection to the local environment. We built a Next.js application that treats their craft with the reverence it deserves.
The
Challenge
Selling sake online often suffers from a disconnect between the deeply tactile, historical nature of the product and the sterile environment of a typical web store. The challenge was to bridge this gap.
Translate 156 years of brewing history, the purity of Niigata snowmelt, and the dedication of the Toji (master brewer) into a compelling digital narrative.
Create an immersive product exploration experience that educates customers on sake varieties (Ginjo, Daiginjo) and pairing philosophy without overwhelming them.
Implement a seamless booking system for brewery tours that integrates deeply with their operational scheduling.
The
Solution
We developed a clean, minimalist Next.js application that utilizes ample whitespace, refined typography, and sweeping photography to evoke the clarity of premium sake. The design language acts as a quiet canvas, allowing the brewery's story and products to take center stage.
A serene, uncluttered aesthetic relying heavily on off-whites and deep indigo to reflect traditional Japanese dyeing and the clarity of water. Typography balances modern sans-serifs with traditional Japanese Mincho fonts for headings, creating a bridge between eras.
Next.js App Router for optimal performance and SEO. The site leverages static generation for content-heavy historical pages and server-side rendering for real-time inventory and tour availability.

Final
Reflection
Shimizu Sakagura proved that tradition and technology are not at odds. By exercising extreme restraint in design and focusing on the tactile narrative of sake brewing, we created a platform that honors their 156-year legacy while actively driving new business through modern e-commerce and booking flows. It's a testament to using Next.js not just for speed, but as a canvas for quiet, confident storytelling.
